Estimating 3D Print Time

Print time depends on the number of layers, the path length per layer, and the print speed. Taller objects with more layers take longer.

For a quick estimate: layers = height / layer height. Time per layer depends on the cross-section area and perimeter being printed. This calculator provides a ballpark before you commit to slicing.

Print time estimate = (total filament path length) / (travel speed × motion efficiency factor). Slicers account for acceleration ramps, direction changes, and travel moves. A rough manual estimate: print volume (cc) at 0.2mm layer height = layers × average layer area. Each layer takes area / (nozzle diameter × layer height × print speed) seconds.

Key speed settings that affect time: print speed (perimeters, infill, bridges), travel speed (non-printing moves), layer height (fewer layers = shorter time), and infill density. Doubling layer height from 0.1mm to 0.2mm roughly halves print time; doubling infill from 20% to 40% adds 15–25% time depending on model geometry.

Acceleration limits print time more than nominal speed at small features. A printer set to 60mm/s with 3000 mm/s² acceleration can't reach 60mm/s on short perimeters — it accelerates, then immediately decelerates. Input shaping (Klipper's resonance compensation) allows higher accelerations with less ringing, meaningfully reducing time on complex parts.

Real-world accuracy: slicer time estimates are typically 10–20% under actual print time for standard prints; the estimator is more accurate for large flat objects and less accurate for highly detailed parts with many retractions. Monitor first layer adhesion personally — automated time estimates don't account for failed prints.
