How to Estimate 3D Print Filament Usage

Most slicers show estimated print volume in cubic centimeters. Multiply by the filament density to get weight in grams. Divide by the spool weight to see what percentage of a spool the print uses.

Filament length can be calculated from weight: length (m) = weight (g) / (density × π × (d/2)²) where d is filament diameter in cm.

Filament usage = (model volume × infill %) + (shell volume) + (support volume). Slicers calculate this automatically, but this calculator estimates from geometric dimensions. Volume is in cubic centimeters (cc = ml). PLA density ≈ 1.24 g/cc; PETG ≈ 1.27 g/cc; ABS ≈ 1.05 g/cc; TPU ≈ 1.20 g/cc.

Filament weight = volume × density. A 20cc model at 20% infill with 3 perimeter shells using PLA: shell volume ≈ 20 × 30% of outer surface area (rough estimate) + infill ≈ 20cc × 0.20 = 4cc internal + ~2cc shells = 6cc total. Weight = 6cc × 1.24 g/cc = 7.4g. At $0.02/g (typical PLA pricing), cost ≈ $0.15.

Standard 1kg spools of 1.75mm PLA contain approximately 330 meters of filament. At 0.4mm nozzle and 0.2mm layer height with 20% infill, a typical printer consumes about 1 meter per 5 minutes — a 1kg spool lasts roughly 27.5 hours of printing time.

Filament diameter matters: 1.75mm is the dominant standard for desktop FDM printers. 2.85mm (sometimes called 3mm) is used by some Ultimaker and Lulzbot models. Never mix diameters in the same printer — extruder gear tension and Bowden tube sizing differ significantly. Always confirm your printer's required diameter before purchasing.
